Civil War Pension

In reference to our last issue I mentioned that we would start a topic on the Vredenburgs in the Civil War. I asked that subscribers send in their records, such as pensions etc. Elsie Vredenburg, of Tustin, Michigan has done just that, she has sent a Civil War pension record for her ancestor, Francis D. Vredenburg. He was born in Chemung County, New York and enlisted into Company D. of the 107 New York infantry at Elmira, New York. We have included the entire pension record in this issue to demonstrate how informative these records can be. If your ancestor served in the Civil War, and you have not acquired a pension record, now is the time to do so. You may learn many new details about your ancestor including much personal data. In the records here, we have many more pensions on file that will be published in future issues.

Query Regarding Wm. Hazard Vredenburgh

Vredenburgh Maureen Fawks of Lombard, Illinois, writes regarding her great great grandfather, William Hazard Vredenburgh, and his brother, Wright Field Vredenburgh, who as teenagers removed from New York and came to live with relatives in New Orleans, presumably with the Louisiana Field's. She seeks information about their family in New York, and also when, why, and how they came to New Orleans.

On the later question, we at the Vredenburg Searcher have no information, but would welcome any help that the readers can provide.

As for the family in New York, we have some information that might be of help. Elias Vredenburgh, born 10 Dec 1793 at Tarrytown, NY, died 21 May 1874, married in 1817, at Yorktown, NY, Sally (or Sarah) Ann Field, born 18 Apr 1797, died 26 July 1825, daughter of Hazard Field, born 11 Nov 1765, died 5 Feb 1845 at Yorktown, NY and (1st wife) Fanny Wright, married June 1778. Hazard Field married Mary Bailey (2nd wife) 12 Jan 1806. The children of Elias Vredenburgh and Sally Ann Field were:

1) Hester Maria, born 7 Jan 1818, married 12 Nov 1851 Jacob L. Ryder, a farmer, born 1 July 1811, died 3 Aug. 1888;

2)Wright Field, born 22 Aug 1820 at Tarrytown, NY, died 5 Apr 1864 at New Orlean, married 12 Dec 1844 at New Orleans Anna Henriette Hebrard, born 27 Sep 1827, died 23 Jan 1869 (daughter of Antonine Hebrard, 1780-1860, and Melanie Nicolas de St. Ceran (1782-1836);

3) William Hazard, born 26 Oct 1822, married 26 Oct 1846, both residing at New Orleans, Louise Augustine Odile Field, born 7 March 1830 (1829?), (daughter of Pierre Seaman Field, born 22 Feb 1794, died 20 Sep 1860, residing at New Orleans, and Louise Marie Eliza Du Bourg de Ste. Colombe, born 6 Jul 1806, died at New Orleans 15 Feb 1874, married 14 Sep 1822); and

4) Mary Ann, born 30 May 1825 at Yorktown Heights, Westchester County, New York, married 22 Dec 1847 Samuel Haviland Fowler.

Elias Vredenburgh's second wife, Fanny Field, was the half-sister of his first wife, Sally Ann Field. They had a daughter, Fanny, born 18 Sep 1841, who married John E. Hanes.

We would welcome the assistance of any of our readers can assist with more detailed information, particularly on the ascendants of Elias Vredenburgh.
