"Edwin Jesse Babcock... was a civil engineer all of his career. Heserved as a Lt. in the army in World War I. He attended the Univ. ofNebraska for about three years, and began his engineering career inJune, 1920, with the Nebraska Roads Department. From 1923 to 1925 hedid consulting work for a private firm in Crete and Omaha, NE. Helater returned to the State Highway Department. In March, 1936, hewent with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads as a planning engineer. Hewas an engineer on the (construction of the) Alaskan Highway (AlcanHighway) in 1942-43, stationed in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Thefamily joined him in 1943. He was sent to the PRA office in KansasCity, then back to Lincoln, NE. He was a Certified ProfessionalEngineer, State of Nebraska, a member of the National Society ofProfessional Engineers, and the American Society of Civil Engineers.He lived in Lincoln, NE from 1925 or 1926, and died in Rockledge, FL,while visiting his daughter Patricia and her family. "He was known as'Deke' to everyone -- except his mother!" "Deke" had devoted over50 years of his career to public service, including 30 with the Bureauof Public Roads. About 41 years of his highway engineering experiencehad been in NE. He was one of the pioneers in the establishment ofhighway planning in Nebraska and in the Nebraska District Office.He was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Public RoadsAdministration for service during theconstruction of the Alcan Highwayduring World War II. In 1948 he received the American Association ofState HighwayOfficials certificate for 25 years of public service. In1963 he received an award from the Special Acts or Services (Bureau ofPublic Roads) for engineering assistanceprovided in evaluating flooddamage to roads and streets earlier that year.
